Asha Mevlana

Asha-2014“When I first saw the Viper at the ASTA conference, I fell in love and IMMEDIATELY ordered one! The sound is excellent, the look is amazing and the design is brilliant.

“Now that I don’t have to hold the instrument under my chin, I can sing more easily while I play, it is very comfortable and I no longer get back pain. Plus I have the range of a violin, viola, cello and bass all in one!

“Mark takes pride in each and every one of his instruments and made sure my Viper was exactly how I wanted. The Viper far surpasses any of the electric violins I have played.”

Asha has shared the stage with artists such as Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Black Eyed Peas, Lionel Ritchie and Queen. She has also appeared on the Tonight Show with Alanis Morrisette, the Jimmy Kimmel Show with CeeLo, and the Ellen Show with the Jonas Brothers. She performs regularly with the American Idol band and can be seen on the Three Doors Down video, “Landing in London.” She has toured with Gnarls Barkley, opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and performing at the Grammys, and currently performs as the lead violinist for the Trans Siberian Orchestra West Coast tour.

Elizabeth (Zee) Crain

ElizabethZee“I knew I wanted to be a musician from a very young age. However, there was not much out there that was exciting and innovative and different in the string world. But then I discovered Wood Violin and after playing a Viper, two years prior to owning my own, I knew that one of Mark’s instruments was what I needed to take my music to the next level. I got my seven-string Viper when I was just a

Freshman in high school, and it changed my life forever! Now when I walk on stage, I make a statement even before playing a single note. On top of that, the tone quality of a Wood Violin is way beyond that of any other electric stringed instrument out there. Before Wood Violins, I was limited as to what I could do to make a living as a string player. Now, the possibilities are endless.”

Elizabeth “Zee” Irelynn Crain is a freelance string player, and vocalist, as well as a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. As A Tennessee native, born and raised in Music City, she has been constantly surrounded by the music scene and the influence of the many great artists of Nashville.

Zee began taking violin lessons in the Classical Suzuki Method at age four, learning primarily by ear, and has since grown to have a deep love and passion for music. At age thirteen, Zee also began taking viola lessons and joined the viola section in her local orchestra.

In November of 2013, Zee was asked to join Mark Wood, and nine other students, on stage at the MuzArt World Foundation event called “We Are Hope” in Salt Lake City, UT. In February of 2012, Zee became the worship leader for Shelby Avenue Baptist Church in Nashville, Tn, where she played guitar, violin, and sang. In June of 2008, Zee was one of two violists who played as part of the featured musicians of the Hannah Montana Orchestra for “Hannah Montana: the Movie”.

Currently, Zee plays violin, viola, and sings with her alternative-style quartet called Harbingers of Awesomeness, which was formed in the summer of 2013, with fellow instrumentalists and electric string-players Nick Schaefer, Michael Lucarelli, and Adam Rafferty. Zee attends Trevecca Nazarene University on scholarship for viola and is working towards her degree in Commercial Music Performance with an applied study in violin, emphasis in Recording Tech. On campus, she is part of the Trevecca Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Band as well as Lab Band II, which is an electric jazz/blues/rock group, in which she plays her Viper and sings.

Zee is in the process of writing and recording her first album, which she hopes to have released by next fall. Along with violin, viola, and vocals, some of Zee’s other instruments include guitar, piano, and flute.

Adia

Adia“As a classically trained violinist, I was always curious about how to take my violin playing outside of the traditional realm, I just didn’t know how. It wasn’t until I met Jesus Florido who was playing on a Viper (the coolest violin I’d ever seen) that it all began to make sense. Jesus invited me to Mark O’ Connor’s fiddle camp, where I was introduced to Mark Wood and his amazing collection of instruments. My journey thus begun. I spent the next several years patterning my playing style and sound after electric guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Slash, and I wanted an instrument that provided me with the versatility of sounding like a guitar or a violin. I was attracted to the Sabre because it felt and played like a regular violin but had the power to stand up to guitar amps. By pairing my Sabre with a Marshall amp and a few pedals, I have been able to create a sound that rivals most guitarists.”

blacksun-sabreAdia is the proud owner of the Black Sun Sabre, an insanely beautiful creation from our Chris Compston Artist Series.

She is the leader of Adia & The 7 Eyes, a rock and soul band based out of Chicago, IL. Since hitting the live circuit in January of 2013, the band has received substantial national and international IRadio and indie blog exposure in addition to winning Chicago Deli Magazine Artist of the Month. Most recently Adia opened for Grammy Award winning guitarist Steve Vai as the winner of the Sam Ash Best in Shred Competition.

Marcus Ratzenboeck (Tantric)

MarcusRatzenboeck“Mark Wood’s violins have given me an incredible edge in the rock world.  The versatility and range of the 7-string fretted Vipers give me the capabilities of a violin, guitar, and bass..not to mention it looks awesome! Vipers offer high quality sound whether clean, distorted, or through effects, also great for studio recording as one instrument can cover violin, viola, cello and bass.”

Marcus Ratzenboeck is an accomplished violinist in both classical and rock music genres and has been an active and successful solo, chamber, orchestral, and studio performer for 20 years.  After graduating from Florida State University with a Bachelors of Music in Violin performance, Marcus completed his Masters in Music at Indiana University.  He was then appointed Principal Second Violin of the Louisville Orchestra and Adjunct Professor of Violin at the University of Louisville.  Marcus was a member of the Louisville String Quartet often recording and touring.  He was also Concertmaster of the Louisville Bach Society.  Currently Marcus is a member of the platinum selling rock band “Tantric” serving as a songwriter and the electric violinist of the group performing on 7-string “Vipers”.  Tantric is a rigorously touring band with over 8 top ten active rock chart singles and four album released under Warner and Maverick Labels.

Corinne Olsen

Corinne Olsen“I discovered Wood Violins back in 2005, and from that moment knew the Viper was the electric violin I wanted to play. As a multi-genre artist himself, Mark Wood understands the needs of those of us who think outside the classical box. The Viper’s tone and response are even and reliable and don’t have the shrill E string or fuzzy C string a lot of other five-string instruments I’ve tried possessed. It’s a bonus that it has an eye-catching design that draws attention and is easy to play. For Avery Watts’s shows in particular, the Viper gives me the freedom to head bang, rile the crowd, and jump off of three-foot high ego blocks without worrying I’m going to drop my instrument. What more could a rock star ask for?”

Corinne Olsen regards herself as a rock star who happens to play classical instruments, equally comfortable sitting in a symphony orchestra or head banging in a rock band. From an early point in her performance career, Corinne discovered she would rather play music people recognized than follow the classical repertoire. Luckily, her studies provided opportunities to play a little bit of everything – rock, Broadway, symphonies, chamber, movie soundtracks – all before entering college.

Corinne is a freelance violinist and violist throughout Southern California. She is a member of the Golden State Pops Orchestra in San Pedro and featured violist for rock musician Avery Watts. Other groups she appears with, past and present, include Southeast Symphony, the Brentwood-Westwood Symphony, the Corona Symphony, Sucré, Sleeping At Last, Bamboo, and premiere Led Zeppelin tribute band Led Zepagain, to name a few. She received her Master of Music, Viola Performance from California State University, Long Beach and holds a Bachelor of Music, Violin Performance with a minor in Music Business from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. Corinne plays a Wood Violins Viper and is proud to be an endorsed artist with D’Addario Bowed Strings.

Spags (Jennifer Spingola)

Jen Spingola“Wood Violins are by far the most professional electric violins on the market today. For anyone who is looking to take their craft seriously, this is a must have. I personally play a 5-String Viper Violin and wouldn’t dream of playing anything else. The instrument itself is a showstopper, with its unique and unusual aesthetics. But the greater appeal for me lies in the warm and beautiful tone that is nearly impossible to find in an electric violin. I perform all over the world, and audiences are continually fascinated by my instrument. I would recommend Wood Violins in a heartbeat to any violinist out there.”

Heather Isbell

20110114_1204“Yes, love at first sight IS possible. My COBRA Cello is AMAZING! If you want to “wow” the audience when you walk out on stage, look no further. I have tried others, and NOTHING else even comes close to this gorgeous instrument’s sound and freedom! Being a ROCK Orchestra Director, I need to be able to stand, roam the stage and operate hands free from an instrument when needed. The COBRA Cello fits all of my needs perfect. 5 strings give me more range and ease of play, while the frets help to keep my pitch perfect when I can’t hear myself well. The possibilities on my Cobra are endless and she teaches me something new everyday. I am so proud to own and play this instrument.”

Heather is the founder of Youth Rock Orchestra in Little Rock, Arkansas and has hosted several Electrify Your Strings! visits with Mark and The Mark Wood Experience. She has become a valued member of our team and truly is our Cobra Queen!
